HOCKEY isn’t one of the popular sports in suburbia, particularly out in the west.
To put a spotlight on the sport, Lyn O’Reilly started Kings Langley Hockey Club.
Since its inception late last year, the sport has now been introduced to local schools.
Teens from the club are working with Quakers Hill East Public School students as part of the Active After School Communities program.
The idea behind the program is to showcase the sport to children through fun activities and encourage fitness and sport, rain, hail or shine..
Dominique Macer-Wright, Justin McRae and Amrinther Ghuman are the trio running the five week course.
“I never thought hockey would happen here,” club president O’Reilly said.
“There is this misconception that you can only play hockey on specially designed grounds.
“But we’re training on tennis courts and cricket ovals. All we want to do is create a local hockey community so the sport is accessible and affordable.”
O’Reilly said the school program started after chatting with Hockey NSW in ways of promoting the sport in the Blacktown Local Government Area.
